DANSE ORIENTALE AND ITS INFLUENCES: HISTORY, CULTURE, TECHNIQUE, AND MUSIC

Myriam Eli from Harmonic Motion (www.harmonicmotion.com) offers this intensive study based on the credited course she taught for five years at Florida International University, Department of Theater and Dance in Miami, FL.  She incorporates additional material from the Folklife Apprenticeship award she received as Master Teacher from the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources.  Material includes historical and cultural background as well as technique in Danse Orientale and several folk forms that may have contributed to its rich movement vocabulary (see below for details).  Class time includes lectures, discussions, video viewing and critique, dance technique, choreography, improvisation, percussion, and occasionally live traditional musical accompaniment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

PURPOSE: (1) for Orientale/Middle Eastern/Belly dancers who desire a deeper study and broader perspective of this ethnically based art form; (2) to help the dancer become more aware of her/his dance heritage and lineage; (3)   to help the dancer discover her/his historical place, significance, and influence in this dance field.

LEVEL: intermediate to professional / LOCATION: Broward County, FL, USA (please contact instructor)

CLASS SIZE:   minimum 4 students

CLASS DAYS/ TIMES/ FREQUENCY: determined by the instructor and students who are ready to register.   Once registered, students commit to attending all classes for continuity of study.

PART 1 - 10 classes - 25 hours / PART 2 - 10 classes - 25 hours / NOTE:  Part I is a prerequisite for Part II (no obligation to take both).  This gives a chronological perspective to the history and a progression on the technique. (STARTING SOON)

PART II: Includes material on the following topics: Moroccan Guedra & Shikhat; Traditional music for Danse Orientale; Working with live music; Rhythms & zills survey; 6 part Cabaret show (fast entrance, bolero veil work, 4/4, floorwork, drum solo, finale, followed by bow, chaser, & exit); 9/8 Cabaret karsilama & Romany styles; Double veil; Flamenco influences; Choreographing and using the stage; Technique, choreography, and improvisation; Introduction to dumbek.

DANCE (with live music):

~ DANSE ORIENTALE TECHNIQUE - This is available at beginner, intermediate, or advanced level. The dance includes isolation movements such as circles, figure eights, and undulations as well as the faster, more rhythmic hip work. It may also include veil work and playing zills (finger cymbals).

~ TURKISH ROM 9/8 - This workshop includes rhythm break down, zills with various rhythm patterns, skirt work, Rom style gestures, choreography, and improvisation.

~ RHYTHMS AND ZILLS - Students work with 5 beat and 7 beat rhythm patterns to create a zill/dance solo. The class includes structured improvisation & choreography to these rhythms seldom used by Oriental dancers.

~ BENDIR DANCE - Students learn to play bendir (frame drum) and dance simultaneously. First, students learn to play basic 6 beat patterns on the bendir, later adding dance movements while playing to create a solo or group piece. Students will need a 9" to 11" frame drum.

~ A TOUCH OF FLAMENCO FOR THE MIDDLE EASTERN DANCER - includes flamenco arm movements added to Middle Eastern torso work, and flamenco skirt & fan work, with a choreography with fan to tsamiko (Greek) rhythm.

~ BULERIA MORA - Students learn an original Moorish flamenco dance style in 12 beat rhythm. Class includes explanation of rhythm, palmas (hand clapping), flamenco arm movements with Middle Eastern torso work, minor footwork with bare feet, and Bulería choreography.

~ VEILWORK - technique, improvisation, choreography. Double veil class also available.

~ ARMENIAN WOMEN'S DANCE - choreography.

~ MOROCCAN SHIKHAT - This is the dance of the professional performers of Morocco. This workshop may also include introduction to GUEDRA, a trance dance of blessing from the Blue People of the Sahara, a Tuareg tribe.

~ EGYPTIAN CANE DANCE - This dance comes from a sparring martial exercise which is now a performance art. This workshop may include choreography with one or two canes.
